The penguin is one of nature’s most peaceful animals, but when it’s viewed in the world of SEO, it becomes extremely frightening. Penguin 1.0 demoted websites guilty of a number of webspam practices, including keyword stuffing.

Penguin 2.0 does more of the same, plus it addresses a number of other content-related issues.

What exactly does it affect? It’s hard to say, but the update has been out a couple weeks already, and here’s what some other industry experts note:

Blog comments are taking a hit – Commenting on other blogs is an often-used link building practice. It’s okay to do, as long as the blog is somewhat related in topic to yours and it’s of decent quality. Hint: stay far away from SEO companies that offer to do 1000s of blog comments in your SEO strategy – they only hurt your search engine rankings.

Low-quality guest blogs – Those poor blogs are taking a beating in Penguin 2.0. Guest blogging is a great way to get links and targeted traffic. But, now more than ever, you have to make sure you only post on quality blogs.

Google will look at the number of ads, quality of the content, and the links pointing to the blog, among many other factors, when determining if it’s a quality blog or not.

Be careful with link anchor text – Experts say 10 – 30% of your anchor text should exactly match your keywords. Now, however, you should also use your URL, company name, and blog name also as part of your anchor text. Google is all about authority these days, and using branded anchor text helps it recognize you as an authority in your niche.

What You Should Do

Even before Penguin 2.0, you should have been creating quality, useful content, and sprinkling the keywords throughout where they feel natural. Penguin 2.0 just makes it that much more imperative that you compose your content in that way. In addition to writing content that offers additional value to your target audience, you should also:

Set up Google Authorship. This allows you to claim ownership of particular content, whether it’s on your site or not. It helps Google see you as an individual, an authority. It helps searchers with that too. It’s fairly easy to do – you’ll have to Google it to learn exactly how because it’s more than we can explain now.

Add long-tail keywords to your content. Long-tail keywords will become even more important post-Penguin 2.0 because of Google’s emphasis on quality content. You can take advantage of this by designing landing pages and blog articles that focus on 1 long-tail keyword. It makes it easy for you to create a useful article that doesn’t sound keyword-stuffed.

Research your content and make it authoritative. Some signals to Google that your content is authoritative include:

Proper spelling, grammar, and sentence structure

Lengthy content – 1000+ words (but make sure it’s all useful, not just to fill space)

1 link to another page on your website

1-2 links to authority sources outside of your website

Diversity – adding in graphics or video to your written content

Do it Right Now – Don’t Try to Game the Search Engines!

At no point should you try to game the search engines in any way. Don’t fall into the trap of creating more pages of content because Google wants more words. It does want more words, but they have to be useful for your users.

If you try to manipulate the search engines now, it always burns you in the long run.

Make sure you focus on what Google really wants to reward over the long haul: a quality user experience for everyone who visits your website.

This is a concept that I often find myself explaining to my clients. The main reason is my poor clients are continually bombarded with wild promises from Telemarketers that they can get them up on Google first page of search for hardly any money. Now most of these phone calls never go any further but what is happening is the uneducated business owner (in regards to digital Marketing) begins to believe that this is the only thing their business will need. Which is furthest from the truth if you are a business that is looking to achieve a competitive market share in your industry. Now if you are a pest control service and you own your own business and have 1 truck and a couple of guys then Google might be enough to sustain your business. However if you have aspirations of growing your business and having 10 trucks and 40 guys then you are not even scratching the surface.

To begin with you will need a custom website design that is competitive in depth and style with your competitors. For most major industries a 5 page website is no longer going to cut it. You will need a 20 page site or larger depending on your competition. In addition you’ll need unique relevant content to fill those pages. Detailing the important aspects of your business, encompassing consumer needs, and accentuating your competitive advantages.

Now comes the fun part, at least it is the part I get most excited about, which is establishing your digital footprint within your local market. To do that you need to have your local listing and social listing established. They include, Google+ Pages, Yahoo Local, Bing Local, Facebook fan page, twitter account set up, Yelp account which feeds Apple Maps, and Google Maps (Yes they are different then Google+, this will show your location on smart phone Google Map Programs). In addition you will also need to have your local listing created for many other niche directories including yp.com, dexknow, and many others. Interactive media also helps you to separate yourself with a youtube channel as well as video business profiles, product advertisements and product and service instructions.

Next in the process of a complete local digital footprint you will need your search engine listings to be SEO’d in their local markets. A reputation management strategies to gain client reviews and to be alerted when a negative review takes place. From there you add in some sponsored Pay per click (PPC) advertising to cover obscure but relevant keywords. Re-marketing Banners to continually stay in-front of your prospective clients during the buying cycle, as they will appear to people who have visited your site in the last 30 days. Video sponsored ads, for me this is an area that is being ignored by local businesses and I believe it is a huge mistake. These are videos that will play on Youtube to sponsor the upcoming Video, Keeping these to 15-20 seconds helps to keep your audiences attention.

Finally adding a mobile strategy as this is the fastest growing search segment, making sure your website is responsive which is what mobile users prefer over mobile sites. Emailing campaigns is also a great way to keep in touch with your clients and to inform them of new products/services or specials.

So as you can see having a digital advertising program is a lot more than just being or getting up on Google. I also anticipate that the search distribution will grow as mobile searches continue to Grow.

Matt Cutts talks about Google cleaning up domain cluttering. Years ago we used to see many results from the same domain but it didn’t provide a good search result for the end user so it started to get cleaned up. Google is cleaning it up again and they will only show up to two listings for a single domain now. We think this will provide more exposure for some websites as the results will be less cluttered.

Finding the right White Label SEO provider can be difficult. When you are in the throughs of setting up your digital internet marketing agency and like most agencies you are looking to outsource some of the services. You have probably spoken to close to a dozen providers and are more confused now then you where when you started looking. It s best to simplify your efforts by prioritizing your needs. Lets take a look at what I mean.

First list out all of the services your digital ad agency is going to provide in order of importance. For example Local Listing Optimization (if you are dealing with local businesses this is more important than SEO and needs to be handled on Google, Yahoo, and Bing), SEO (search engine optimization), SMM (Social Media Marketing), Reputation Management (Some include that in SMM), Rating and review (some categorize that with reputation management), Reporting, Website Design, E- Commerce, PPC(Pay Per Click), Website Development, Video Chanel Optimization (You Tube..), Content Writing, Video Production, email marketing, Mobile marketing, display advertising, Re-marketing, website support and website hosting. Your order may be different and keep in mind all services offered needs to be fulfillable. I use a balance between what is most important to a prospective client, most difficult to fulfill and what is most profitable.

Then remove all services that you will do in-house vs outsourcing to a White Label SEO provider (1 Source Media Group, I know shameless plug). This will help you when you speak to a White Label Internet Marketing provider as you will be able to speak to the services that are most important to your agency and a completeness of services. You do not want to start a white label relationship with a company that can not support your business unless you don’t mind having two, three and sometimes four providers to handle fulfilling your services. Here is an example of the problem it provides, if you have one white label group that does SEO and another that does your Content Writing and another that does your Social Media Marketing and your SEO group requests Content they email you then you have to email your Content Write and then your Content Writer emails you a question ant you email your SEO provider and then its time for social media. You get the point it becomes an inefficient and slow process that often has mistakes along the way not to mention time delays.

Solution, find a White Label Digital provider who can handle all of the services that you are not going to handle in-house so you can do what you do best, which is build your client base, business, and local brand.

1 Source Media Group is a full service Digital Agency and White Label Provider. We are able to fulfill all of your agencies needs under 1 one label which will help you make your digital agency a complete service provider.

The internet can be very confusing and daunting for a business to get a complete handle on. Businesses today are overwhelmed by the amount of online media offerings and they are struggling to understand them. They often confuse these offerings as true online business solutions. They often do not distinguish between product offerings and there own businesses local online representation. They are sometimes confused over the differences between local directories and local search. They are often sold lead generation products as a full solution to there online reputation.

The need for an internet marketing consultant continues to grow at an alarming rate. Basically because the internet continues to grow and redefine the way in which we communicate and contact one another. As well as new product offerings and a growing number of internet marketing salespeople, who simply sell an isolated product that may or may not help your business. But most of the information they give you is to convince you about their product and not necessarily about your business. The best course of action is to remain calm and develop a good relationship with a good internet marketing consultant. A business owner simply can’t keep up with everything that they need to do and all of the changes as they happen.

What an internet marketing consultant does – They will look at your business in the shoes of a business owner and identify everything that a business needs to be successful online. Including local search solutions for google yahoo and bing so you rank organically on your local search engines. Sponsored campaign budgets to capture additional available leads. Social Media recommendations so you can build an active relationship with your current clients. Reputation Management solutions that respond to all reviews left across the internet including Google and Yelp, as well as assist in motivating current clients to leave reviews. Creatively assist you in developing winning advertising slogans and impact full web design and development applications like e portals and smart phone/device apps. They are also able to help identify truly valuable niche advertising solutions as well. For example a car dealership may be benefited by subscribing to dealerater.com and your internet marketing consultant is able to help figure that out for you. I look at an internet marketing consultant as a primary care physician in the sense that this is the person you trust with the health of your online business and they may refer you to other specialists as needed like an app development team or outsourced treatment to dealer rater.

The demand for internet marketing is only going to keep growing. Do your business a favor and find an internet marketing consultant that you can build a long term relationship with. Your business will benefit dramatically if you do.

Today more and more new websites are still launching a separate mobile site that is usually shorter in length and is less everything compared to the desktop website version. According to Google Webmaster Central Blog Google is also encouraging the use of responsive websites.

Responsive websites have a different HTML page for each browser that is supporting by the device being used. If you are using a iPad then you will see the table website version which is usually very similar to the full desktop version. If you are using an iPhone or Android smart phone you will see a different page formatted for the smaller screen size.

Amazon does a wonderful job showing you different layouts for every type of device that would showcase the Amazon online store. More and more websites are coming out with this updated CSS styling because users don’t want less condensed versions of websites. They want all the same content and functionality that they would received on the desktop computers at work or home.

Now with LTE wireless networks we don’t have to wait all day for the content to load which makes responsive sites even more valuable. LTE is a wireless technology known as 4G offered by AT&T, Verizon, Sprint and other wireless providers

Responsive websites are higher in cost because you are designing 3 websites into one essentially. One design for desktop, one for table and one for mobile phones with Apple iOS or Android operating systems. If you have a mobile store go responsive and witness an increase in conversions.
